The emergence of cooperation in a multi-agent system

چکیده
This paper fits in the framework of Distributed Artificial Intelligence and more specifically in the field of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS).We show why antagonism should be considered inMASmade up of autonomous agents and how these systems can even turn antagonism to advantage. We set up in SWARM a MAS aimed at exploring the possibilities of antagonism, oriented towards mobile robotics applications. Experimental results based on speed-up measurements illustrate the emergence of cooperation in the system.

Emergence-based Cooperation in a Multi-Agent System
We discuss antagonism and cooperation in multi-agent systems. We show theoretically and experimentally that cooperation can emerge in a multi-agent system despite the presence of antagonism. moreover antagonist situation can be capitalized on.
متن کاملEmergence of Cooperation in a Bio-inspired Multi-agent System
Cooperative behavior of social insects is widely studied and mimicked in Artificial Intelligence communities. One such interesting cooperation is observed in the form of philanthropic activity e.g. army ants build bridges using their own bodies along the route from a food source to the nest. Such altruistic behavior helps to optimize the food gathering performance of the ant colony. This paper ...
متن کاملEvolutionary Cooperation in a Multi-agent Society
According to the evolutionary ethics theory, humans have developed a moral sense by means of natural selection. A “moral sense” supposes some form of cooperation, but it is not immediately clear how “natural selection” could lead to cooperation. In this research, we present a multi-agent society model which includes a cooperative act in order to investigate whether evolution theory can explain ...
متن کاملInvestigating the Mechanisms Underlying Cooperation in Viscous Population Multi-Agent Systems
This paper presents a viscous population multi-agent system, which is claimed to provide scope for the emergence of cooperation both through iterated interaction and through kin selection. Theoretical examinations of iterated interaction and kin selection within the model are conducted and compared with empirical results. It is concluded that the model does allow for the operation both of itera...
متن کاملNorm Emergence in Tag-Based Cooperation
In multi-agent systems norms are an important influence that can engender cooperation by constraining actions and binding groups together. A key question is how to establish a suitable set of norms in a decentralised population of self-interested agents, especially where individual agents might not adhere to the rules of the system. In this paper we investigate the problem of norm emergence, an...
